D186. A fascinating late 19th century four dial travelling clock with a compass immediately below the carrying handle.
This clock, in the form of a lantern, is surmounted by a bronzed and fluted cupola resting on a gilded base. The silvered body of the clock , which is of substantial construction, is rectangular with canted corners, to the top and bottom of which are gilded bolts. The clock rests on block feet.
The silvered clock dial has delicate roman numerals and is surrounded by a gilded bezel, as are the other dials. There is one giving the days of the week and month and another recording barometric pressure. This is graduated 60-79 and is signed by Gagi, 1 Rue de L’ecaille, Paris. It has the usual indications such as G.Pluie, Variable & Tres sec.
On the fourth side of the clock is a silvered door with a gilded grille into which is set a thermometer graduated in centigrade and fahrenheit. The clock movement is signed with a B in a circle & numbered 5?16. On the inside of the back door is engraved Bté SGDG Depose.
This probably refers to Guilmet’s Brevet No 119,862 in 1878 for a four-dial carriage clock.
