Description / Expertise
D358. A particularly fine champleve mantel clock in the cloisonne style, made for the Chinese market. The decoration of the main panels has a light blue back-ground to which floral decoration, in a variety of colours, has been applied. These are surrounded
by a dark blue border, again with floral decoration.
To the corners of the case are applied what appears to be trees in flower. To the top of the case is a Chinese Lion, commonly called a Foo Dog, with his paw on a globe; a symbol of power. The gilded chapter ring has roman numerals. The bell striking movement bears the initials GV and the numbers 189 and 36050 on the backplate.
The case, which has alternate layers of gilding and bronzing, has been cleaned but not repolished during restoration and the movement has been overhauled.
