Description / Expertise

D350. A particularly fine quality grande sonnerie striking carriage clock with the usual selection lever in the base for Hours and Quarters, Silent and Quarters only. It bears the stamp of Margaine, a famous maker, on the backplate in the form of a beehive with the initials AM on either side. Below this the movement is numbered 7866. The gilded case is finely engraved.

The four white enamelled dials are set into a silver gilt mask with the main one employing roman numerals for the hours and arabics for the minutes. Below the main dial it has a subsidiary dial for the alarm: to the left is indicated the days of the week in both French and English and on the right are shown the days of the month.

It is signed for Howell James and Co, To the Queen, London, who were eminent jewellers.

Ht with/without handle 7.5/5.8" (18.5/15cms.)
