Description / Expertise
A small and fine quality Regency mahogany writing desk/chiffonier, circa 1820.
The upper portion of this piece consists, in effect, of three tiered shelves of decreasing widths, supported on either side by decorative fretted out cast brass brackets. There is a flap in front of the bottom shelf which hinges forward to provide a velvet covered writing surface. To either side are lidded recesses for pens, ink and stamps. One contains a silver topped bottle marked with a crown and “Patent London” whilst in the other side is an engraved and hallmarked silver pen. Below the fall are drawers to either side which also act as supports.
Beneath the drawers is a cupboard, the doors of which have well figured mahogany recessed panels. The attractive lobed and fluted feet have castors deeply recessed into their bases so that they are scarcely visible.
Height: 49.5" (126cm) Width 30" (76cm)
