Description / Expertise
D228. A most attractive three-quarter size striking and repeating carriage clock beautifully decorated with champleve enamel, circa 1885.
The case has gilded corinthian capitals with champleve enamel columns to the four corners and a handle of greek key design, again decorated with enamelling. The base colour for all the decoration on the clock is blue with, in addition, many other colours such as green, dark blue, pink, deep red and cream.
The circular enamelled dial, with stylised arabic numerals and delicate spade hands, is signed by the retailer Bennetfink & Co London, but also has on it “made in Paris”. The enamelling around the dial is particularly well executed with blue, green and mauve laid on a cream ground and surrounded by a serpiginous dark blue border, outside which is further decoration.
Ht with/without handle:- 5.75"/ 4.5" ( 14.5/ 11.5 cms.) £3,650.
