D301. A good eight day mahogany longcase clock by Cha Campbell of Bo’Ness (Borrowstounness), near Edinburgh, circa 1790.

There is a swan-neck pediment with brass paterae and wooden frets to either side. The hood columns are fluted and brass capped and there are quarter columns to either side of the trunk, the door of which has inlay to the centre. There is boxwood stringing around the edge of the trunk door and this is repeated around the base of the clock, which has fan inlay to the four corners.

The eight day movement has an attractively and delicately painted dial, probably by Wilson, with Roman numerals for the hours and arabics for the minutes. There is a seconds hand below 12 and in the lower part of the dial the day of the month is recorded. In the centre of the arch there is an oval plaque with raised gilt studs to the border which is signed by Campbell. It is flanked on either side by well executed sprays of flowers.

Old Scottish Makers by John Smith, pages 76 &77 records Smith as working as a clock and watchmaker from 1770 to 1812. He died on 27th of November of that year.
