D223. A fine full size striking and repeating carriage clock with three porcelain panels,
each depicting different birds, circa 1890.
This clock, signed on the dial by George Barnes, the retailer, has a case similar in style to the anglaise riche, with fluting to both sides of the four columns and on the base. The relatively large panels are most attractive, that on the front depicting three bullfinches alongside a pond with flowers
running up one side. The dial has bold arabic numerals surrounded by a gold border with a bird and a sprig of flowers to the centre. The panel to the left shows a blue tit and a wren perched in branches alongside a stream, whilst on the other side panel are a blue tit and a wren in a similar setting.
The movement, which strikes and repeats on a gong, is numbered 290. It has its original good quality lever escapement.
