Description / Expertise

D242. We have only seen one other carriage clock (I) in which the beautifully executed oval panels are displayed in this way by surrounding them with engine turned and gilded masks. Some inkling of their rarity may be indicated by the number one on the backplate. Circa 1880.

The panels are of exquisite quality, that on one side depicting a courting couple set in a country scene whilst on the other side are two young colourfully dressed girls. The circular white enamelled dial with roman numerals features in the centre a girl playing on a mandolin
whilst below, set in an oval panel, is a girl who has just picked a bunch of flowers.

The clock, which strikes and repeats the hours on a gong, has a good quality lever platform escapement and comes with a velvet lined leather travelling case.

Height with/ without handle:- 7"/ 5.5" ( 17.8/ 14cms.) (1) Derek Roberts. Carriage and other travelling clocks. Fig 10-13.left.
