Description / Expertise

D245. A fine quality and most impressive clock of Year Duration by “Susse Frères, Paris.” Circa 1875.

The very substantial “four glass”case of this clock has a gilded and moulded brass frame with bevelled glasses. The movement, which virtually fills the width of the case, has very heavy plates just over 6" in diameter. There are two very large spring barrels, mounted between the plates with both driving onto a common arbor and thus providing maintaining power. External click-work is provided and the backplate is numbered 5288. A jewelled Brocot escapement is mounted between the plates and a small escape wheel is provided, as would be expected with a long duration clock. A two jar mercury compensated pendulum is employed. It is signed on the dial “Regulateur, Marchant un An. Susse Freres Paris.

An interesting feature is the use of rear wind which avoids marring the dial in any way.

Height:- 17.5" (44.5 cms.)

A very similar clock, also by Susse Freres, who are recorded as working in Paris at Place de la Bourse between 1850 and1900, is illustrated in Mystery, Novelty and Fantasy Clocks by Derek Roberts. . Fig 9-21.
