D280. Guilmets “Steam Hammer” clock, circa 1880.
This clock, which strikes the hours and halves on a bell, is numbered on the backplate 1102 and bears two stamps; Medaille D’Or Brt SDGT Paris and Brt-5000, Paris 395, which refers to his patent. It also carries the stamp of Japy Freres, who would have supplied the basic movement.
It is inspired by the steam powered hammer used for shaping metals. In these one man would place the item to be flattened on the forge below the hammer and when he signalled that he was ready the man standing on the platform to the left (not seen on these models) would release the hammer onto the metal.
On these models (seen best on the side view) the linkage between the man on the platform and the steam pump on top can be seen. The frame of the clock is gilded and the body matt silvered. The clock rests on a Belgian black slate base with brass feet.
